TBB Smells Luxury…

If you’ve ever popped into the fragrance hall at Fortnum & Mason, you’ll quickly realise that it is a no-nonsense area. The buyers make it their business to handpick the crème de la crème of fragrances, the most decadent of perfumes and the world’s most desirable scents. It comes as no surprise then that upon the centrepiece of the fragrance hall sits Clive Christian’s range of perfumes and his self-branded ‘World’s Most Expensive Perfume.’

You might know Clive Christian as the bespoke interior designer who’s refined and luxury taste lead him to purchase the Crown Perfumery, which had longs since lost its glamorous reputation for fine perfume. Clive came across a Crown Perfumery green glass bottle hidden under the floor boards, whilst renovating his house and then, after research into the one time royal perfumery, he decided to restore it to its former glories and values.

Clive Christian launched his very own fragrances in the style of the prestigious, antiquated perfumery. Clive Christian No.1, released in a series of 1000 men’s fragrances and 1000 women’s fragrances, has been marketed as the world’s most expensive fragrance due to its enormously expensive ingredients and diamond adorned apothecary style bottle. In fact it even holds a Guinness World Record for the title! Extravagant, desirable or just plain ridiculous you decide – after all a fragrance is only worth something if you enjoy the smell.

For the first and only time since 1999, Clive Christian has released a new fragrance. ‘C’ is presented to the grasping hands of its costumer in an amber glass bottle with a gold crown lid and aspires to be a sensual aroma for men and a flirty, wily scent for women. Saffron, an ingredient more expensive than gold by the gram, lies at the heart of ‘C’ For Men and the extremely rare snow lotus, native to Western China and a known aphrodisiac. In my opinion ‘C’ For Men is by far the superior of the two as ‘C’ for women includes violet, which can’t help but remind me of the sugary parma violets of my youth. Interestingly, I am told, that it is the perfumer’s intention for you to prefer the smell of the male fragrance, seeing as both are meant to act as an aphrodisiac to the opposite sex.

Clive Christian ‘C’, 50ml costs £195 and is available from Fortnum & Mason and The Roja Dove Haute Perfumerie at Harrods.
